The Philippine Army (PA) welcomed Major General Greg Almerol as the new commander of the 2nd Infantry “Jungle Fighter” Division (2ID) in a change of command ceremony held Friday, Sept. 11, at Camp Capinpin in Tanay, Rizal.

Lieutenant General Cirilito Sobejana, PA commanding general, presided the turnover of leadership between Almerol and Maj. Gen. Arnulfo Burgos Jr., who was designated as the new commander of the Northern Luzon Command (NOLCOM).
Sobejana challenged Almerol to sustain the “culture of excellence while balancing mission accomplishment and the troops’ welfare” at the 2ID.
“Let us continue to fulfill our mandate of securing the citizens of Southern Luzon. Let us strengthen our capabilities to find, pressure, and end our enemies,” Sobejana said.
Before assuming command of the 2ID, Almerol served as the deputy chief of staff for intelligence of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP).
He also headed the 903rd Infantry Brigade with operational jurisdiction in Albay, Masbate and Sorsogon; and the 60th Infantry Battalion based in Asuncion, Davao.
Almerol is a member of the Philippine Military Academy (PMA) “Makatao” Class of 1989. He holds a Master’s degree in Public Administration.
Meanwhile, Sobejana commended Burgos for destroying enemy strongholds in his stint at the 2ID. Among his notable accomplishments was the destruction of two guerilla fronts of the New People’s Army (NPA).
Under the command of Burgos, the Jungle Fighter division neutralized 508 suspects, seized 143 firearms and 63 anti-personnel mines, and cleared 64 barangays affected by communist insurgency.
Burgos takes the helm of the NOLCOM following the retirement of Lt. Gen. Ramiro Manuel Rey last Tuesday.
