CEBU CITY, Sept. 26 (PIA) -- In the first weeks after COVID-19 hit and the government instituted community lockdowns to control the transmission of the virus, the 53rd Engineer Brigade (EB) of the Philippine Army stepped up to fill in the growing need for personal protective equipment (PPE) among frontliners.
Col. Gerardo Catindoy, Commander of the 53rd EB, said their brigade was among the first to respond during the pandemic by fabricating face masks and protective suits.
“Sa katunayaan po during that time there was a scarcity ng face shields and protective suits,” said Catindoy.
The PPE produced by the brigade has reached not only hospitals in Cebu but also in Metro Manila, Laguna, and Cavite areas.
The brigade also assisted the Cebu City government by deploying vertical construction teams to help build project NOAH, an isolation facility located at the South Road Properties.
Their team was also among the first to create UVC boxes for disinfection which were distributed to schools.
Catindoy also shared that their team built five decontamination chambers which were distributed to Vicente Sotto Memorial Medical Center, Project NOAH facility, and three to the Philippine Air Force and Philippine Army units.
Meanwhile, the 53rd EB, together with stakeholders and donors, has been conducting outreach programs since the onset of the pandemic.
Some of the communities they went to are in Gilutongan Island, Moalboal, and San Remigio. (poc/PIA7)
