Two policemen going to a quarantine control checkpoint were injured in an ambush in Manito town in Albay, a police official said on Monday.

Capt. Dexter Panganiban, Albay police spokesperson, in an interview, said the incident occurred around 10:05 a.m. on Monday in Barangay Cawayan while the victims were on board a Philippine National Police (PNP) patrol jeep headed toward the control point to render duty post.

Based on the report, the policemen were identified as Staff Sergeants Roger Dajac and Melchor Buban, both members of the Manito Municipal Police Station.

"Three improvised explosive devices (IEDs) exploded as they passed through the village and followed by an explosion from an M203 grenade launcher,” Panganiban said.

He added that the two PNP personnel, who suffered slight injuries, returned fire, and were able to leave the ambush site.

“Pursuit operation against the perpetrators is being conducted now,” Panganiban said.

Col. Primitivo Bayongan, Albay provincial director, in a statement, condemned the ambush perpetrated by a still unidentified group.

“Umaapela po kami sa mga mamayan na maaring nakasaksi o may nalalaman sa nasabing pangyayari na makipagtulungan sa Manito MPS upang agarang makilala, mahuli at masampahan nang kaukulang kasong criminal ang may mga kagagawan (We appeal to the community who may witness the incident to help the Manito municipal police station so that we can file criminal charges against the perpetrators),” he said.
