Senior military officer dies of suspected Covid-19

From the Philippine News Agency (Aug 9, 2020): Senior military officer dies of suspected Covid-19 (By Priam Nepomuceno)

A senior military officer died at the V. Luna Medical Hospital in Quezon City while exhibiting symptoms of the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19), Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) spokesperson Marine Maj. Gen. Edgard Arevalo said Sunday.

"We have yet to receive official medical reports that would reveal the cause of death other than the erstwhile symptoms suggest Covid-19," he added in a statement to reporters.

As of August 8, the AFP has reported that 1,137 of its personnel have become infected with the dreaded disease.

Of this figure, 516 have been cleared and reported back to duty, 138 have recovered and are waiting for their medical clearances, 473 are considered active cases, and 10 have succumbed to the disease.

"AFP chief Lt. Gen. Gilbert Gapay is closely monitoring these developments. He has directed unit commanders and chiefs of offices to vigorously pursue efforts to address and contain the incidence of Covid-19 infection so as not to adversely affect AFP operations," Arevalo said.

He added that the AFP cannot afford to fail on its mission of keeping peace and security during this difficult time.

"We cannot, in this difficult time, fail the people and various government agencies that rely heavily on the AFP to maintain peace and security as well as assist in the responses for the health and well-being of our countrymen," Arevalo said.
