Two members of the New People’s Army and a soldier were killed when government troops clashed with the rebel group in Candon City, Ilocos Sur, the military reported.

Members of the Army’s 702nd Infantry Brigade clashed with the rebels in Brgy. Suagayan, around 2 p.m. Saturday, Armed Forces Northern Luzon Command spokesman Maj. Ericson Bulosan said.

Troops were conducting patrols when encountered members of the Komiteng Larangang Gerilya-South Ilocos led by alias “Nero,” he said.

Residents earlier reported the presence of an armed group in their community, so the army to conduct patrols, Bulosan said.

Ambulances were sent to the area following the clash.

Lt. Gen. Ramiro Manuel Rey, Nolcom chief, directed troops involved in the clash to tighten their security and intensify the focused military operation in the area.

“Even amidst the COVID-19 pandemic, we assure the people that we will not stop performing our mandated task of securing the safety and well-being of our people,” he said.

Bulosan, meanwhile, said Ilocos Sur’s recent proclamation of the NPA as persona non grata has resulted in a major weakening of the rebel group’s local unit.
