From the Manila Bulletin (Dec 14, 2019): 1 NPA killed as gov’t troops seize rebels’ hideout (By Mike Crismundo)

CAMP BANCASI, Butuan City – Army troops belonging to the 58th Infantry Battalion (58th IB) captured a communist-New People’s Army (NPA) hideout Friday after several minutes of gunfight that resulted in the death of one rebel and the wounding of a soldier and several other rebels in the upper area of Banglay, Lagonglong town, Misamis Oriental province.

The identity of the slain rebel was not immediately known.

Lt. Col. Roy Anthony Derilo, commanding officer of the 58th IB said the seized CPP-NPA hideout belongs to the Guerilla Front Committee 4-B of the CPP-NPA North Central Mindanao Regional Committee.

Elements of the 58th IB already encountered the other day the fleeing rebels but again engaged them in upper Banglay of that same town.

“The rebels were just placing their hammocks and other things in their hideout when spotted by our pursuing troops,” said the 58th IB commander, in his flash report to the command group of the 403rd Infantry (Peacemaker) Brigade and to Maj. Gen. Franco Nemesio M. Gacal, commanding general of the Army’s Northeastern and Northern Mindanao 4thInfantry (Diamond) Division (4th ID).

A gunfight erupted but the rebels immediately disengaged after sensing that they were outgunned and out positioned, Lt. Col. Derilo said.

Operating troops seized in the encounter site some high powered weapons such as AK47 and M16 Armalite rifles, Carbine, and Garand rifles and caliber .22 rifle and several assorted live ammunitions.

Hot pursuit operation is still ongoing against the fleeing rebels in the mountainous areas of Lagonglong town.
