Despite having skipped National Heroes’ Day ceremonies on Monday morning, President Rodrigo Duterte took time to visit the tomb of an unnamed fallen soldier at the Libingan ng mga Bayani later at night.

Photos from Malacañang showed the President attending a funeral and also lighting a candle in front of a tomb of an unknown soldier at the Libingan ng mga Bayani.

Earlier, Senator Christopher “Bong” Go, Duterte’s former aide, said the President could not attend the National Heroes’ Day ceremonies because he was “indisposed” and was “not feeling well” but assured it was no cause for concern.

House Speaker Alan Peter Cayetano delivered Duterte's National Heroes' Day message on the President's behalf.

Go said Duterte was busy with activities over the weekend, which include a meeting with Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) founding chair Nur Misuari in Davao City.

He also assured that Duterte’s scheduled visit to China from Aug. 28 to Sept. 1 will push through.

Duterte is set to hold his eighth bilateral meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping on Aug. 29.

Several agreements are expected to be signed between China and the Philippines during the Filipino leader’s fifth visit to China, according to the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA).

The President had said he will raise the arbitral ruling in favor of the Philippines’ arbitration case against China’s nine-dash line map during his meeting with Xi.

Duterte will also watch a Gilas Pilipinas’ opening game against Italy in the FIBA World Cup 2019 in Foshan City in Guangdong province on Aug. 31. He will be accompanied by Chinese Vice President Wang Qishan.
