As the country commemorates the National Heroes’ Day on August 26, 2019, troops from the different units under the operational control of the Western Mindanao Command honored the heroism of the fallen soldiers who paid the ultimate sacrifice during operations against the different threat groups in the area.
In Marawi City, a wreath-laying activity was spearheaded by the 103rd Infantry Brigade to pay homage to the 168 fallen heroes who were killed during the Marawi siege.
The Philippine government lost 168 government forces (soldiers and police) in the battle against the ISIS-inspired Maute Group, a notorious group whose religious adventurism turned more than 200,000 innocent settlers into internally displaced people and left dozens of historic, centuries-old Meranao dwelling enclaves in ruins.
“We honor and cherish the valorous deeds of all those who have made great contributions for the betterment of our country,” said WestMinCom Commander Lieutenant General Cirilito Sobejana.
“We also commemorate the heroism of our fallen soldiers who made the whole struggle of humanity worthwhile,” Lt. Gen. Sobejana added.
Meanwhile, troops of the 1st Mechanized Infantry (Maaasahan) Brigade, led by Deputy Brigade Commander Colonel Pedro Balisi, Jr., graced the unveiling of the exhibit, “Putong, Hibla, Kultura Filipina,” organized by the city government of Tacurong.
The activity, spearheaded by Tacurong City Mayor Angelo Montilla, was initiated to give recognition to the arts and crafts that depict the giftedness of human hands of the different tribes and the abundance of the culture and heritage of Mindanao.
A wreath-laying activity then followed at Dr. Jose Rizal’s Monument, City Hall Compound to commemorate the National Heroes’ Day.
It was attended by representatives from the different government and private agencies.
