NEGROS ORIENTAL, Philippines – A human rights advocate was shot dead on Sunday, July 7, at Aglipay Street in Poblacion, Manjuyod town.
Romano Baldoza, 43, was on his way home when he was waylaid by unidentified riding-in-tandem suspects. The victim, who was onboard a motorcycle, succumbed to multiple gunshot wounds.
He was brought to a district hospital in neighboring Bais City but was pronounced dead on arrival.
Colonel Raul Tacaca, provincial police director, said the two suspects escaped to an unknown direction and that they are being pursued by authorities.
Recovered from the scene were one deformed slug and 4 empty shells of caliber .45 pistol.

Romano was said to be an adviser of the Youth of the Iglesia Independiente Filipinas and former Negros Oriental coordinator of the human rights group Karapatan.
According to Karapatan, Romano is the 69th human rights advocate killed in Negros Island under the Duterte administration.
