Local officials of the Lanao del Sur town of Tamparan surrendered five more loose firearms to the Army’s 49th Infantry Battalion (49IB) on Tuesday.
Lt. Col. Edgar Allan Villanueva, 49IB commander, said the surrendered firearms consisted of an M-14 rifle, one M-16 Armalite rifle, and three caliber .45 pistols.
The turnover came a day after Taraka officials handed over 11 unlicensed guns, consisting of one caliber .50 Barrett sniper rifle, one M-16 Armalite, one AR-15 semi-automatic rifle, one 12-gauge shotgun, and seven other handguns.
“The support of the local government units in our area of operation to our campaign against loose firearms manifest their desire for lasting peace and prosperity in the province of Lanao del Sur,” said Col. Romeo Brawner, the Army’s 103rd Infantry Brigade commander.
“We encourage not only the local government units but also other stakeholders to trust and support our campaign against loose firearms for us to be able to attain a peaceful and secure province towards its faster development,” Brawner added.
Brig. Gen. Roberto Ancan, the Army’s 1st Infantry Division and Joint Task Force Zampelan (Zamboanga Peninsula and Lanao provinces) commander, commended the efforts of the troops and the local government unit of Tamparan, which led to the successful handover of the loose firearms.
“Your 1st Infantry Division, in collaboration with the LGUs and other stakeholders, remains steadfast in its commitment to attain just and lasting peace in our area of operation through our campaign against loose firearms,” Ancan added.
