Students of the Visayas State University evacuated from their dorms due to a bomb scare.
Metro Manila (CNN Philippines, March 28) — Officials in a Leyte school have suspended work and classes after a school official and several students received a bomb threat via text message.
The Visayas State University (VSU) in Baybay City, Leyte called off work and classes on Thursday citing a "security threat." Work in offices will resume Friday while students can attend classes again on Monday.
On Wednesday, the university's Vice President for research and Extension and a few students reportedly received text messages from an alleged member of the New People's Army at 1 p.m., warning of a bomb implanted in the school.
Students and employees were immediately instructed to vacate their dorms and offices and to remain vigilant.
Leyte police are also conducting a campus-wide sweep in search of possible explosives. PLt. Col. Ricky Reli said they will continue coordinating with school authorities and the military during the investigation.
"We are not discounting the possibility that this is just a diversionary [tactic]. Maybe they will focus their unlawful activities to some other parts of the region," Reli told CNN Philippines' Newsroom.
Reli said the security threat is limited to the school's premises saying there is no urgent need to secure surrounding areas. He urged the public to remain calm.
"It is only limited to Visayas State University…of course we are not being complacent, all necessary precautionary measures are being made and of course we are encouraging the public to remain calm. The situation is normal," he added.

A diversion?
The Leyte police chief said they cannot yet confirm if the NPA is responsible for the bomb scare. However, they are not discounting the possibility of the NPA using the threat to draw attention away from possible attacks in other areas."We are not discounting the possibility that this is just a diversionary [tactic]. Maybe they will focus their unlawful activities to some other parts of the region," Reli told CNN Philippines' Newsroom.
