IPIL, Zamboanga Sibugay -- The Army’s 102nd Infantry Brigade on Wednesday activated the Task Group Sibugay Bay to address peace and security concerns in the province.
Brig. Gen. Bagnus Gaerlan, 102IB commander, said the activation of the task force seeks to synchronize the various efforts against all threat groups in the province.
Col. Jose Randolph Sino Cruz, Army’s 102nd Infantry Brigade deputy commander, was assigned as chief of the Task Group Sibugay Bay.
A Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), in support and commitment of the activation of the task group, was signed by Gaerlan, Governor Wilter Yap Palma, the officers of the Zamboanga Sibugay Provincial Police Office, Philippine Coast Guard, and the League of Municipalities.
Commodore Joseph Coyme, South Western Mindanao Coast Guard District commander, said the task group aims to suppress terrorist threats and fight criminality--particularly kidnapping, piracy, and the proliferation of illegal drugs and firearms.
Palma said the provincial government will provide three fast crafts to the task group, including communication equipment.
Palma also appealed to local officials to provide support in terms of food and fuel to be used by the teams in the conduct of patrols.
Brig. Gen. Roberto Ancan, Army’s 1st Infantry Division commander, lauded the cooperation of local officials and noted that "peace and security is a shared responsibility".
"Without the trust and support of the parties and other stakeholders, we cannot attain a just and lasting peace in our area of operation, especially in the province of Zamboanga Sibugay,” Ancan said.
