The Philippine Army (PA) said on Thursday it is the
prerogative of the President or the Chief Executive to release political
prisoners, especially in relation to the scheduled Aug. 20 peace talks in Oslo , Norway .
"The release of political prisoners is the prerogative
of the President (Rodrigo R. Duterte) that we will support, especially that it
is related to peace," PA spokesperson Col. Benjamin Hao told the
Philippines News Agency.
Presidential Spokesperson Ernesto Abella said earlier that
some political prisoners, including Communist Party of the Philippines-New Pew
People's (CPP-NPA) Chair Benito Tiamzon and his wife, Wilma, will be given safe
conduct passes when government peace negotiators meet with officials of the
National Democratic Front (NDF) this coming Aug. 20.
”As far as I know, as of this moment, they are included. I
think they will be given safe passes,” he added.
Benito and Wilma were arrested by Armed Forces of the
Philippines (AFP) and Philippine National Police (PNP) elements in Barangay
Zaragoza in Aloguinsan, Cebu last March 22,
2014.
They are currently detained at the PNP headquarters at Camp Crame , Quezon City .
The couple was arrested by virtue of a warrant of arrest for
their crimes against humanity that include murder, multiple murders, and
frustrated murder.
