Jak Roberto as Joma Sison with former congressman Erin Tanada who plays the role of his grandfather, Senator Lorenzo Tanada, in a scene from 'Tibak' (The Story of Kabataang Makabayan)'.
As earlier announced by incoming president Rodrigo Duterte, exiled Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) founder Jose Ma. Sison is returning to the country.
Sison is expected to arrive from the Netherlands after Duterte assumes the presidency on June 30. In addition to playing a central role in the resumption of the peace talks between the government and the National Democratic Front, Sison has also expressed his intention to reunite with old friends and family members.
And as confirmed by journalist turned filmmaker Arlyn dela Cruz, Sison intends to grace the premiere of her new film “Tibak (The Story of Kabataang Makabayan)”, based on the life of Sison during his early years as a youth activist.
Dela Cruz herself confirmed to InterAksyon that the 77-year-old revolutionary figure dubbed as “Joma” will indeed attend the premiere night of “Tibak” sometime in July or August.
The film would be the second biopic of Sison following Sari and Kiri Dalena’s “The Guerilla is a Poet”, which covered Sison’s life from his early days as a youth leader during the turbulent years of Martial Law until his capture in the mountains and subsequent imprisonment that led to his birth as a poet.
Dela Cruz, who wrote, produced and directed “Tibak” said her film focuses more on Joma’s youth activism and the Kabataang Makabayan, the nationalist youth group that he co-founded during the 1960s.
Since the 1990s, she has interviewed numerous personalities identified with the CPP and its armed wing, the New People’s Army, from all over the country.
In addition to these interviews, she also had an exclusive interview with Sison in 2006 which collectively provided her with enough material for her film.
During the shoot of “Tibak,” Dela Cruz went to the Netherlands to meet with Sison and shoot some scenes there.
Headlined by Jak Roberto as Joma Sison and Jill Placencia as Sison’s wife, Julie de Lima, “Tibak” also stars Marc Solis, Kristoffer King, Kiko Matos, Joel Saracho, Jao Mapa, Zyrus Imperial, Lehner Mendoza, Neil Carandang, Zyrus Desamparado, Justine Aguilon, Bibo Bayona, Rain Villar, Chase Vega, Sophia Tolentino, Rose Cabrales, Cris Garrido, Michael Beltran, Sarah Elago, Jude Matthew, Jeff Fernandez and Dido Dela Paz.
The film is also introducing Marion Aunor as Nida with special participation by Julio Diaz, Soliman Cruz and Lui Manansala.
