Four more armed men believed to be members of the Communist
Party of the Philippines (CPP) armed wing, the Guerilla Front 21 (GF21)
surrendered to the 2nd Special Forces Battalion (Airborne) under the 402nd
Infantry (Stingers) Brigade, Philippine Army, at 7:00 a.m. on Wednesday.
The surrenderees, Army said, brought along with them an M16
Assault Rifle, twelve 81mm rounds of mortar explosives, 13 rounds of M203 grenade
ammunition and several subversive documents during their surrender to the said
military unit.
The military also said that during the conduct of debriefing
of the four surrendrees, they positively identified a wounded person found to
be left behind by his fleeing companions as a member of Guerilla Front 21B.
It can be recalled that on March 11, the elements of the
said military unit had encountered an undetermined number of communist rebels
belonging to Guerilla Front 21, while conducting security operations at the
vicinity of Baroboan, Brgy. Caromata, San Miguel town in Surigao del Sur.
The encounter resulted to the wounding of one from the enemy
side whom the government troopers from the 2nd SF Battalion rushed to a
hospital in Tandag
City .
Meanwhile, natives in the area belied a report from a
non-government organization claiming as a human rights group, which tagged the
legitimate armed encounter as a strafing incident allegedly perpetrated by the
elements of the 2nd Special Forces Battalion. The group also alleged that the
incident allegedly prompted the lumad community in Caromata, San Miguel town to
evacuate.
Datu Rico Maca, the Municipal Tribal Chieftain of the Manobo
Tribe in the area who was alarmed by the claim conducted a dialogue together
with the evacuees to assess the situation. In an interview, the chieftain
debunked the claim of the NGO that what had happened was a strafing incident
instead of a legitimate encounter.
