A Japan Maritime Self-Defense (JMSDF) training submarine and
two destroyers will be making a goodwill visit to the Philippines this coming April 3-6.
Philippine Navy (PN) spokesperson Capt. Lued Lincuna
identified the training submarine as the JDS Oyashio (SS-511).
She is named after the Oyashio Current, a cold current that
comes down through the Bering Strait .
While the names of the two "destroyer type" ships
are still unconfirmed as this posting.
"The visit is a customary engagement with other Navies.
PN will render a customary welcome ceremony and port briefing upon
arrival," he added.
"Part of the activity is a shipboard tour on board
their vessels participated by PN delegates and to be followed by reception
activity. There will be a series of confidence building activities,"
Lincuna stressed.
The visit is expected to enhance the strong relationship
between PN and JMSDF.
The PN spokesperson said the former is also a manifestation
of a sustained promotion of regional peace stability and enhancement of
maritime cooperation between the neighboring navies.
