Malacanang on Wednesday said the government remains ready to
resume peace negotiations with the communist group without any condition.
Presidential Spokesperson Edwin Lacierda reiterated its
commitment to pursue a peace deal with the Communist Party of the
Philippines/New People’s Army/National Democratic Front (CPP/NPA/NDF) despite
death of Loreto, Agusan del Sur Mayor Dario Otaza, a former NPA rebel and a
Lumad peace advocate.
Otaza and his son Daryl were found dead Tuesday morning just
hours after they were abducted from their home in Butuan City
by armed men believed to be members of the NPA.
“We have always been ready to discuss the table with them
regardless of what happens on the ground… Handa po ang gobyerno (to return to)
the peace table to resume talks provided that they don't impose any conditions.
They are the ones who are imposing the conditions,” said in a Palace press briefing.
“So if they wish to proceed with the peace talks, with no
conditions, why not? That is always the agreement that we have,” he added.
The Palace official also assured that the government will
continue holding its serbisyo caravan for peace and development.
“We will continue to show the services what government has
done and can do for them,” stressed Lacierda.
“We will continue to also convince the people why it makes
sense to return to the fold of government. There is no reason for them to
remain in the mountains,” he said.
