Two members of the outlawed Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom
Fighters (BIFF) were hurt after a botched attack on an Army detachment here
Tuesday night, police said.
Chief Inspector Abdulbasit Kulod, Datu Salibo town police
chief, said about five heavily armed BIFF guerrillas attacked at 7 p.m. the
detachment of 3rd Platoon, 21st Mechanized Company of the 2nd Mechanized
Battalion in Sitio Gadong, Barangay Sambolawan, Datu Salibo town.
The attackers fired rocket propelled grenades toward the
Army detachment base manned by alert infantrymen who retaliated and fired back
with their assault rifles towards the attackers.
Village residents later told police they saw the attackers
fleeing, with two of their comrades wounded.
Kulod said no one was hurt among the Army personnel who
quickly maneuvered its armored personnel carrier and chased the rebels who
disappeared using the cover of darkness toward a nearby marshland.
Kulod said normalcy has been restored, and that passage of
commuters on a highway in Barangay Sambolawan was not affected by the incident.
Colonel Dickson Hermoso, 6th Infantry Division provost
marshal, condemned the harassment and reiterated the directive of Maj. Gen.
Edmundo Pangilinan, 6th ID chief, for all military units in Maguindanao to
maintain alert status.
The BIFF had been blamed for the series of “hit and run”
attacks on military personnel either in military detachments or in non-combat
activities.
”They have been into guerrilla attacks after they were
almost reduced to nothing when the Army launched law enforcement operations in
February to March this year,” Hermoso said.
At least 50 BIFF and 10 soldiers were killed during the
two-month air and land assaults on BIFF lairs in Maguindanao’s second district.
Hermoso said soldiers under the 6th ID had been directed to
refrain from traveling on motorbikes along highways of Maguindanao as
precaution.
On Sunday, an Army intelligence operative was killed in the outskirts
of Cotabato City , while his companion was wounded in
a broad day light attack by BIFF militants.
