The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) announced that the
security situation for President Benigno S. Aquino III's last
State-of-the-Nation Address (SONA) Monday was "manageable".
With this development, the military did not raise its alert
status.
"We maintained the normal alert, or white alert, status
because we did not receive any reports about planned untoward incidents,"
AFP public affairs office chief Lt. Col. Noel Detoyato said.
He added that the situation was very manageable and there
was no need for the AFP to deploy troops in the streets to augment the
Philippine National Police (PNP) operatives securing the streets leading to the
House of Representatives in Batasan Hills, Quezon City .
Detoyato said the rallyists were able to express themselves
"and the policemen did a great job and we were not called."
Hours before the SONA, eight people got injured including
four policemen during a confrontation with protesters along Commonwealth Avenue , according to Senior
Insp. Maricar Taqueban, Quezon City Police District spokesperson.
Around 2:00 p.m., Taqueban said the confrontation occurred
between members of cause oriented groups and police contingents near JOCFER Building
along Commonwelath Avenue
that resulted in the injury of four policemen.
Taqueban identified the injured police officers as PO1s
Rommel Orquita, Frank Claro, Engenber Paran and PO2 Jesrald Pacinio who were
treated for multiple abrasions.
She said the policemen went back to civil disturbance
management duties after receiving treatment from medical personnel.
She added the injured protesters were Orlando Cabuang of
Anak Pawis who sustained eye injury due to stone throwing; and Ronaldo de Leon
of Tondo, Manila; Benjamin Irena; and Ryan Guerrero who all sustained abrasions
and were given first aid treatment.
