From the Philippine News Agency (Jul 27): Rebels attack mining firm in Compostela Valley

Troopers from the 10th Infantry Division are now conducting pursuit operations against the New People's Army (NPA) band which attacked the security outpost of the Apex Mining in Barangay Masara, Maco town Compostela Valley Sunday night.

1st Lt. Alexandre Cabales, 10th Infantry Division spokesperson, said that an estimated 30 NPAs affiliated with Guerilla Front 27 attacked the outpost around 7: 30 p.m.

He added that the security facility was quickly burned by the rebels after its occupants abandoned it due to the superior numbers of the attacking NPAs.

Cabales said that the rebels were attempting to burn one backhoe when responding Army troops arrived, scattering the group, who then fled taking with them two security guards as hostages.

The two hostages were eventually released inSitio Bunlang, Barangay New Leyte of the same municipality.

Pursuit operations are still ongoing as of this posting.
