From the Mindanao Examiner (Jul 27): Rebels raid mining firm in Philippines
Communist insurgents raided a mining firm, attacking its security post and burning heavy equipment in the southern Philippines, the military reported on Monday.
It said New People’s Army rebels swooped down on Apex Mining in the village of Masara in Compostela Valley’s Maco town late Sunday and held two security guards hostage against pursuing soldiers.
The two guards were eventually freed unharmed by the rebels.
“They are harassing these businesses to give in to their extortion demands,” said Brigadier General Benjamin Madrigal Jr., the Assistant Commander of 10th Infantry Division.
Madrigal said he ordered troops to pursue the attackers, who were fighting for a separate state in the country.
