From ABS-CBN (Jun 24): NPA member surrenders, hits rebels for failed promises
A member of the Pulang Bagani Command 2 of the New People's Army (NPA) operating in Magpet, North Cotabato and Davao areas has surrendered to the military, an official said.
According to 57th Infantry Battalion commander Ltc. Jose Ambrosio Rustia, the NPA member surrendered to a company commander of the battalion while soldiers were conducting a peace and development outreach program in Barangay Tagbac, Magpet.
The rebel returnee, according to Rustia, said in his statement that he was just fooled by NPA leaders, who promised him social benefits when he joined the revolutionary group.
None of these supposed benefits was realized, he said.
"Allegedly yung promise sa kanya is pagaaralin yung mga anak niya, bibigyan siya ng bigas saka ng pera, kaya natuluyan na siyang sumumpa," said Rustia.
"Ang alam niya na pag ang NPA nag-surrender sa sundalo, bubugbugin sila, pahihirapan sila. Tinatakot sila ng ganito ng mga kasama nila," he added.
Since April this year, eight rebels under the NPA's Pulang Bagani Command 2 have surrendered to the military.
An M-16 rifle was also turned over to the government by one of the returnees.
Five of the returnees are currently under the custody of the municipal social welfare and development office of Magpet.
