“Forces of reason” very needed in these times, says Iqbal

MILF Peace Panel Chairman Mohagher Iqbal said that groups which can stand for reason and sobriety are very important nowadays especially for the restoration of trust between the MILF and government.

Speaking on Thursday before the Davao-based members of the National Union of Journalists of the Philippines (NUJP), Iqbal expressed belief that “forces of reason” would be very instrumental in surmounting the apparent polarization engendered by the January 25 Mamasapano clash.

Iqbal praised the positions made and publicized by influential formations from the religious, business, academe, civil society organizations, youth, professionals and eminent individuals calling for the continuation of the peace process and eschewing all calls for violence.

In explaining the implications of the Mamasapano clash on the ongoing deliberations on the Bangsamoro Basic Law, Iqbal urged the participants to the roundtable discussion to separate the two issues rather than lump them together.

“Although the deaths of the SAF and MILF combatants and civilians are very important, we should look at the larger picture of peace in Mindanao through the passage of BBL,” he said.

The Mamasapano clash should be viewed in the lens of the peace process through signed documents, Iqbal stressed, and not merely in the perspective of Philippine legal processes.

Iqbal explained that the MILF is a revolutionary group and its relationship with the Philippine government is technically defined by signed documents made over a 17-year period of negotiations.

Asked as to the prevailing mood, Iqbal said that MILF combatants and its masses are still hopeful, but are also worried that the “rough situations” may derail the passage of BBL.

After almost a two-hour discussion of the nuances and context of the peace process and the Mamasapano clash, Iqbal also appealed to the members of the media to be “ very responsible, objective and fair, and impartial in the treatment of issues.”
