From the Philippine News Agency (Jan 28): Western Mindanao Command pursuing 8 escaped prisoners including Abu Sayyaf operative

The Western Mindanao Command's Joint Task Group Basilan is now conducting pursuit operations against the eight prisoners, which include an Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG) operative, who made a successful getaway from the provincial jail in Barangay Geras, Sumandang, Isabela City, Basilan on Tuesday.

Col. Rolando Joselito D. Bautista, Joint Task Group Basilan commander, said the task force and its police counterparts will continue to “intensify patrol along the periphery as part of security measure to preempt the rescue of ASG prisoners.”

Initial investigation conducted by the responding elements of the Isabela City Police Station and the Joint Task Group Basilan disclosed that at 8:45 a.m. Tuesday, the provincial warden, Abdulhusin A. Atalad, noticed during the accounting that eight inmates were missing.

As per local police report, the prisoners managed to escape by climbing through the ceiling and jumping at the concrete fence of the jail.
