Ceasefire extends our deepest condolence and sympathy to the families and loved
ones of those who perished in the recent encounter in Mamasapano, Maguindanao.
We call on our national leaders to allow the International Monitoring Team and
the Joint Ceasefire Committee to conduct an immediate investigation in order to
shed light on what actually happened.
Let us not allow emotions and knee-jerk reactions to
prevail and paralyze the strategic importance of the peace process. This is the
time for both Philippine Government and the MILF to demonstrate their avowed
partnership and work together to overcome this crisis.
We
call on the Senate and Congress to proceed with their legislative work on the
Bangsamoro Basic Law while the PNP, AFP and our President attend to this
crisis. Our Senators and Congressmen have come along way in consulting our
people in order to pass the Basic Law. Let us not stop this process now. We
cannot afford to stop.
We
appeal to Senators Bongbong Marcos, Allan Peter Cayetano and JV Ejercito to
continue the committee hearings on the BBL. We are sad that Senators Cayetano
and Ejercito reportedly withdrew their authorship of the BBL. In the interest
of peace and for sake of all peace-loving Mindanaoans who are pinning our hopes
on the passage of the BBL, we appeal to the sense of statesmanship of our
political leaders to await the outcome of an independent investigation. Like
the Senators and Congressmen and especially the PNP and AFP, we too would like
to know what actually happened? We want to know who ordered the SAF to go to
that area?
This
is not the first time that the Special Action Force engaged the MILF. We recall
that in October 2011, nineteen members of the SAF were also killed in Basilan.
There were lessons and recommendations drawn from the investigation that was
conducted then. With this happening all over again, what happened to those recommendations?
Finally,
we call on all peace loving Filipinos to stand united with our firm resolve to
implement in letter and spirit the Comprehensive Agreement on the Bangsamoro.
We also call on the media to join us reminding each and everyone to address this
issue with sobriety, discernment and genuine commitment to peace.
