More indirect fire support weapons in the pipeline for Marine units

From the Philippine News Agency (Dec 27): More indirect fire support weapons in the pipeline for Marine units

More indirect fire support weapons, in the guise of 60mm and 81mm mortars, are in the pipeline for Marine units.

This was announced by Philippine Navy vice commander Rear Admiral Caesar Taccad in a recent briefing about the PN's ongoing modernization efforts.

(These weapons, 60mm and 80mm mortars) will provide indirect fire support to (Marine) rifle companies. These are portable and high angle indirect fire weapons which can also be reliable in any type of terrain," he added.

Taccad declined to give exact figures for the number of mortars to be acquired for security reasons.

A Marine rifle company is normally composed of 100 officers and enlisted personnel.

Taccad said the mortars can be used in internal security and territorial defense operations.

The mortar project is now undergoing evaluation and study, he added.
