From Tempo (Dec 28): Davao NPA losing steam
A senior military officer said yesterday that the government is gaining grounds in its anti-insurgency campaign in Davao, noting that the strength of the New People’s Army (NPA) in the area continues to dwindle as a result of continuous law enforcement operations.
“The number of NPA bandits in this part of the country has significantly dwindled this year with the killing of 39 and the arrest of 21 others during law enforcement operations,” said Army 10th Infantry Division (ID) commander Maj. Gen. Eduardo Año.
“Our troops have also confiscated 77 high-powered firearms and 128 improvised bombs,” he added.
Año credited the civilian population for providing accurate information about the presence of bandits in far-fl ung communities.
“Civilian tipsters are instrumental to our focused-military operations. People who are extorted money by the NPA bandits have collaborated with us in pinpointing jungle hideouts, and most importantly, in identifying notorious bandits who mingle with plain civilians,” said the 10th ID commander.
Aside from those killed and arrested, the Army has also accounted 142 NPA fighters who have returned to the fold of the law. The latest batch of was composed of 39 NPA members who laid down their arms last December 9.
