The Compostela-based 10th Infantry Division of the
Philippine Army has announced that it made 116 engagements with the New
People's Army (NPA) which resulted in the death of 39 rebels and capture of 21
in 2014.
"This further translated into neutralization of 60 NPA
bandits, 39 of whom were killed and 21 captured. Government troops also seized
77 high-powered firearms and 128 improvised explosive devices or IEDs,"
10th Infantry Division commander Major Gen. Eduardo M. Año said.
He attributed the success of government forces in these
series of encounters to the support of the villagers who voluntarily gave
information to the government troops.
“As the legitimate wielder of force, we are duty-bound to
protect innocent civilians against threats of lawless armed elements such as
the CPP (Communist Party of the Philipines)-NPA bandits,” Año said.
The lawless armed group was plunged in a leadership crisis
following the capture of top NPA leaders in the region.
Among those arrested were Felix Armodia, secretary of the
NPA Front 72 who was arrested in Tampakan, South Cotabato on May 2; Roy Erecre,
the secretary general of Central Visayas Regional Committee of CPP-NPA who was
caught in Barangay Bajada' Davao City on May 8; Dominiciano Daungcay Muya, a
member of the NPA's Southern Mindanao Regional Committee (SMRC) Executive
Committee who was captured last Oct. 16; and Jordan Reyes Domillo, commander of
the Main Guerrilla Force of Front 18 who was arrested last Dec. 14.
All are now jailed for various crimes ranging from multiple
murder, robbery and illegal possession of firearms and explosives.
Año vowed more arrest of NPA leaders in the intensified
campaign to crush the lawless CPP-NPA in the region.
“The 10th Infantry Division will remain steadfast in its
mandate of protecting the Filipino people and supporting both the national and
local government agencies in developmental programs. Through our concerted
efforts, we can put an end to this insurgency problem that has brought nothing
but unnecessary loss of lives, damage to properties and unimaginable suffering
to our country and people,” he said.
