From InterAksyon (Jul 1): Terror threat in Davao 'raw,' PNoy clarifies after UK issues travel advisory on Mindanao
After the United Kingdom update its travel advisory for its nationals traveling to Davao City and other parts of Mindanao, President Benigno Aquino III clarified that the information on possible security threat remains "unverified."
It was Aquino who informed Davao City Mayor Rodrigo Duterte of possible threats posed by suspected bomb expert Abdul Basit Usman, who eluded capture last June 10.
"I passed on to Mayor Duterte a raw report --- may I emphasize "raw". I just wanted to make sure that he was given all of the pertinent information to adequately prepare Davao," he said in an interview aired over state-run Radyo ng Bayan on Tuesday.
"The raw report stated that this terrorist who is a bomb-maker had sent a bomb or a bomb-laden vehicle to Davao City to further a terrorist attack...Having said that, both the Philippine National Police and the Armed Forces of the Philippines are actively determining the validity of the report and continuing operations against this known terrorist."
"So we are not discounting any possibility but we want to err on the side of caution and that’s why we informed the good mayor that there is such a report and we emphasized it is raw," the President added.
The United Kingdom Foreign and Commonwealth Office cited the "unspecified security threat" in Davao City and other parts of Mindanao in its updated travel advisory.
On Sunday, Australia also advised its nationals not to travel to certain parts of Mindanao due to a "very high threat" of terrorist attack, kidnapping, violence and crime.
