Two New People’s Army (NPA) rebels have surrendered after they realized they are fighting for an irrelevant ideology in the nearby Misamis Occidential province, an army official said Tuesday.

Army’s 1st Infantry Division Public Affairs Officer-in-Charge Capt. Franco Suelto identified the surrenderers as Arnel Lumangcag alias Ka Jobert, 25, and his cousin, Jerry alias Ka Bogar, 19.

Suelto said the Lumangcags belong to the NPA group based in Misamis Occidental. They are residents of Barangay Lalud, Don Victoriano Chiongbian town of the same province.

Suelto said the duo surrendered Monday to the Army’s 53rd Infantry Battalion headed by Lt. Col. Alvin Luzon following series of negotiations.

He said the negotiations to surrender started when the battalion “Bayanihan Team” conducted an advocacy about the armed forces’ Gun-for-Peace Program.

The rebels who will surrendered will receive remuneration for every firearms they will turn over depending on the type and serviceability.

Suelto said the Lumangcag cousins are set to received P58,000 each since they yielded two AK-47 rifles with ammunition.

He said they could use the money to finance a small business as they a new living.

Army’s 1st Infantry Division acting commander Col. Aminkadra Undug has commended the 53rd Infantry Battalion for a job well-done.
