Gunmen fluent in Malay, says farm worker

From the Star Online (May 8): Gunmen fluent in Malay, says farm worker

LAHAD DATU: The group of men who kidnapped Wonderful Terrace fish farm manager Yang Zai Lin is said to be fluent in Bahasa Malaysia.

A worker at the farm on Pulau Baik, some 18km from Lahad Datu town, said the five kidnappers had initially spoken in Bajau.

“One of my colleagues who first encountered the men told me they spoke Malay with him,” the 22-year-old, who only wanted to be known as Nus, said yesterday.

“They could understand each other very well when the abductors enquired about the location of our boss’ room,” he added.
The gunmen’s main target is believed to be the Hong Kong-based owner who had left on Monday night, hours before the raid, after a four-day stay at the farm.

Nus also said that Yang was a good man and manager, and hoped that he would be released as soon as possible.

Meanwhile, a Kuching-based Chinese consulate official was also here to visit the farm house to better understand the situation while meeting with police in the area.
