Troops kill communist rebel in Surigao City

From the Mindanao Examiner blog site (Feb 24): Troops kill communist rebel in Surigao City

A communist rebel was killed in a clash with government troops in the southern Philippines, officials said.

Officials said the fighting, which erupted in the village of Mabini, lasted about 15 minutes. There was no casualty on the side of the military.

“Our soldiers were patrolling the village when they encountered the group of NPA and fighting erupted. One rebel was killed in the clash,” Capt. Alberto Caber, a spokesman for the Eastern Mindanao Command, told the regional newspaper Mindanao Examiner.

He said troops also recovered a Kalashnikov assault rifle during the clash with the New People’s Army rebels. Caber said the rebels were extorting money from villagers.

Gen. Ricardo Rainier Cruz III, chief of the Eastern Mindanao Command, urged rebels to surrender peacefully and start a new life with their family, instead of fighting a senseless war.

“To live peacefully with your loved ones is better than fighting a senseless war. I urged you to surrender peacefully and lead a life of love and peace,” Cruz said.

The NPA has been fighting for decades for the establishment of a separate communist state in the country.
