A ranking commander of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front was arrested in Cotabato City at around 5:30 p.m. Sunday.
118th Base Commander Wahid Tondok was arrested on the basis of a warrant over multiple murder and arson from the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao’s Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG).
Tondok was arrested at a checkpoint of the joint forces of Marines, police, and CIDG on Matampay Bridge.
The MILF commander was reported to have come from a meeting at Camp Darapanan in Sultan Kudarat, Maguindanao.
In relation to the arrest, MILF Vice Chairman for Political Affairs Ghadzali Jaafar appealed to the authorities to respect the ceasefire agreement that prohibits the arrest of any of their members. He said this is for the peace that the MILF and the government are pursuing in the region.
The government and the MILF have recently finalized the peace talks following years of ceasefire between the two parties.
It will be recalled that the MILF formalized its complaint over the killing of another ranking MILF commander, Yusoph Kusain alias Kumander TMX, last week.
Meanwhile, the authorities are on alert in and around Cotabato and Maguindanao due to the threats from supporters of Kumander Tondok, whom Moros consider a hero.
Tondok is now in the custody of the 6th Infantry Division.
