No govt offensive vs MNLF in Zamboanga City yet - Deles

From InterAksyon (Sep 11): No govt offensive vs MNLF in Zamboanga City yet - Deles

As heavy fighting broke out again for the third day in Zamboanga City, the government on Wednesday has continued to rule out any military offensive against Moro National Liberation Front rebels, presidential peace adviser Teresita Deles said.

In a briefing aired over state-run Radyo ng Bayan, Deles said the government continues to look for a "bridge" to can help end the standoff.

"The volume of our military in Zamboanga City is meant to contain the situation and ensure the protection and safety of the civilians," Deles said. "We are continuing our search for those who may be able to serve as bridge" with the rebels.

Deles’ statement came after the peace negotiating panels of the government and Moro Islamic Liberation Front issued a statement from Kuala Lumpur condemning the violence in Zamboanga City and demanding accountability for those responsible.

MILF chief negotiator Mohagher Iqbal, speaking at the opening of the 40th round of exploratory talks, also said that MNLF founder Nur Misuari’s “declaration of independence” last month and the attack on Zamoanga had effectively vioded the 1996 peace agreement between the government and MNLF.
