Misuari attending 1996 peace pact review in Indonesia

From InterAksyon (Sep 11): Misuari attending 1996 peace pact review in Indonesia

Nur Misuari, who has not been seen since Moro National Liberation Front fighters loyal to him attacked Zamboanga City Monday, will be attending the tripartite review process for the 1996 peace agreement between the MNLF and government next week in Jogjakarta.

Presidential peace adviser Teresita Deles said Wednesday  she learned of Misuari’s attendance at the review, which is hosted by the Organization of Islamic Cooperation, during her discussion with officials of the Indonesian embassy in Manila a day earlier.

"We know that the MNLF, through their different conduits, have requested for assistance to facilitate travel to Jogjakarta," Deles said in a briefing aired over state-run Radyo ng Bayan on Wednesday. "My understanding is they have requested for travel papers for Misuari and two others."

Deles said other factions of the MNLF have also agreed to attend the tripartite review process.

The government is seeking to end the six-year review process with the commitment to implement fully the 1996 peace agreement.

The MNLF, however, has insisted that ending the review is tantamount to terminating the entire peace process.

On the other hand, the Moro Islamic Liberation Front, which is working to reach a final peace pact with the government, has said that the attack on Zamboanga and Misuari’s “declaration of independence” last month, had effectively voided the 1996 agreement.
