Troops are tracking down at least 60 New People’s Army (NPA) rebels that figured in a firefight Wednesday with military troops in the boundary of Zamboanga del Sur and Misamis Occidental provinces, a police official reported Thursday.
Police Regional Office-9 (PRO-9) spokesman Chief Insp. Ariel Huesca said the troops were conducting security patrol when they clashed with the NPA rebels that resulted to the death of a soldier and injured three others, including a junior officer.
The clash took place around 11:00 a.m. Wednesday in the boundary of Tambulig, Zamboanga del Sur and Bonifacio, Misamis Occidental.
The NPA rebels, who split into three groups and fled, were believed to have suffered casualties who were dragged by their comrades, Huesca said.
Huesca said the NPA rebels split into three groups following a 30-minute firefight and fled as they were outfought by the troops despite suffering casualties.
The slain soldier was only identified as a certain Corporal (Cpl.) Depositario of the Army’s 55th Infantry Battalion.
Wounded were Lieutenant Jose Pamor, Cpl. Joseph Vincoy and Private (Pvt) Rudy Lee.
Huesca said the troops are scouring Barangays Dimalinao and Mayamaya in Tambulig town and Barangay Bogo in Josefina municipality all in the province Zamboanga del Sur as two groups of the fleeing NPAs fled to the three villages.
Huesca said that troops are also scouring the hinterlands of Don Victoriano, Misamis Occidental, where the other group of NPA rebels has fled.
He said blocking forces were established as not pursuit continue against the fleeing NPA rebels.
