Army belies NPA report of 27 soldiers killed over a week period

From the Philippine News Agency (May 23): Army belies NPA report of 27 soldiers killed over a week period

The Philippine Army (PA) through its spokesperson on Thursday belied the claim of the New People's Army (NPA)that it was able to kill 27 army soldiers from May 3-11, in an encounter with the government troopers in the various places of Agusan del Sur, Surigao del Sur, Bukidnon and Misamis Oriental.

In a local radio interview Thursday morning, Maj. Leo Bongosia, spokesperson of the 4th Infantry Diamond Division based in Cagayan de Oro City, dismissed as mere propaganda, the claim of a certain Alan Juanito, the alleged spokesperson of the NPA North Central Mindanao Regional Operations Command (Julito Tiro Command), which they have distributed to the various media outlets and posted on their website, that 27 Army soldiers lost their lives during their revolutionary offensives and harassments aimed against the Army and Marine troopers in the areas mentioned at the stated period.

Bongosia admitted that there were casualties on the part of the Army on some of the encounters, but these were properly recorded, verified and accounted and their immediate families were properly informed in all these incidents, he said.

According to him that the number of casualty claimed by the NPA spokesperson was overstated and bereft of facts.

Maj. Bongosia pointed out that the propaganda was intended by the communists to project to the public that the CPP-NPA is still a force to be reckoned with, when the truth is that their strength is diminishing.

Bongosia said the enemy failed even with their projected collection in terms of millions of pesos and it was because of the efforts of the Army to intensify their operations to counter the NPA's extortion activities such as their "Permit to Campaign," and "Permit to Win" during the recent mid-term elections.
