From the Philippine Star (Feb 1): 2
soldiers killed in Compostela ambush
Two people were killed in a series of attacks by leftist rebels in the southern
Philippines, authorities said today.
A soldier was killed after a dozen of New People's Army guerrillas assaulted
two army detachments in the eastern province of Compostela Valley early today,
according to Lt. Col. Lyndon Paniza, spokesman for the 10th Infantry
Division.
Leftist rebels also attacked a militia detachment in nearby Agusan del Sur
province late on Wednesday evening but were repulsed, with the gunmen venting
their ire on an off-duty militiaman living just meters from the militia outpost
and killed him in front of his family, said Superintendent Martin Gamba, police
spokesperson in Caraga region where Agusan del Sur is located.
Paniza, the army official, said the camp commander identified as a Sergeant
Mina, was killed as he and his men fought it out with the rebels in Malamodao
village, Maco town around 6 a.m.
Another group of rebels also fired at an army outpost in nearby Mabini town
almost the same time as that of the Maco attack, but were pushed back.
Police and military units in the southern Philippine region were now put on
alert following the incidents.
The 4,000-strong NPA, armed wing of the Communist Party of the Philippines,
is fighting a leftist insurgency in 60 Philippine provinces since 1969.
