A suspected ranking New People's Army (NPA) leader was among those charged for the killing of nine people in an ambush in Negros Occidental last weekend.
The 3rd Infantry Division of the Philippine Army said Romeo Nanta, allegedly the head of the NPA's Regional Operations Command, was among the 50 people who were charged with multiple murder for the ambush of the mostly civilian victims in La Castellana town.
Nanta was arrested on November 7, 2011 in Barangay Zone 2, Cadiz City and was charged with rebellion, robbery-in-band, and attempted and frustrated murder. He is currently out on bail.
The Army had blamed human rights group Karapatan for securing Nante's provisional liberty. It said Nanta was released from prison after Karapatan-Negros secretary general Fred CaƱa posted bail for the suspected NPA leader. "Their actions have led to this La Castellana ambush," Mabanta said on Friday. He urged Karapatan to bring out Nanta for him to face the charges.
