From InterAksyon (Feb 1): Soldier slain as NPA attacks Compostela Valley patrol bases

A soldier was killed as New People’s Army guerrillas simultaneously attacked Army patrol bases in Compostela Valley province Friday morning.

Colonel Randolph Cabangbang, Army spokesman, said the rebels attacked the Malumadao patrol base in Barangay Malamudao, Maconacon town and the Anitapan patrol base in Barangay Anitapan, Mabini town around 6 a.m.

Government troops also clashed with NPA fighters in Samar Thursday.

Captain Gene Orense, spokesman of the Army's 8th Infantry Division, said troops of the 87th Infantry Battalion clashed with the rebels at an NPA camp in Barangay Rizal, Basey town 11:15 a.m. Thursday.

The rebels retreated after a 45-minute gun battle, leaving behind an M16 rifle, a rifle grenade and ammunition. The soldiers suffered no casualties.
