President Benigno Aquino III is set to appoint Lieutenant General Alan Luga as vice chief of staff of the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP).
Luga, classmate of AFP Chief of Staff Gen. Emmanuel Bautista at the Philippine Military Academy (PMA) “Dimalupig” Class of 1981, is the commander of the Southern Luzon Command (Solcom) based in Camp Nakar in Lucena City.
On Friday, Luga got his third star rank along with Vice Admiral Edgar Abogado, commander of the Central Command based in Cebu City.
Luga will replace Lt. Gen. Noel Cobbales, who was earlier appointed Philippine Army chief.
At least three contenders vie for the Solcom post that will be left by Luga - 8th Infantry Division commander Maj. Gen. Gerardo Layug, 6th ID commander Maj. Gen. Caesar Ronnie Ordoyo, and 1st ID commander Maj. Gen. Ricardo Rainier Cruz.
Meanwhile, Maj. Gen. Rolando Tenefrancia on Friday officially assumed his post as new AFP inspector general replacing Lt. Gen. Irineo Espino, who had earlier been appointed PMA superintendent.
Tenefrancia is former head of the Civil Relations Service, whose command is now under Brig. Gen. Rolando Jungco, former AFP adjutant general. “The turnover of unit and office symbols does not only represent the military tradition of changing of the guards, butalso of the AFP’s value for the organization’s growth and dynamism," Bautista said Friday.
"This also manifests the continuity of responsibilities that our newly designated officers had accepted and must accomplish,” he added.
