From the Philippine News Agency (Feb 1): Recently freed NPA rebel among La
Castellana ambush suspects
Romeo Nanta, head of the regional operations command of New People’s Army in
Western Visayas who was released from prison after posting bail was among the
suspects behind the brutal La Castellana ambush in Negros Occidental. Nanta was identified by Major Gen. Jose Mabanta Jr., commander of the 3rd
Infantry Division of the Philippine Army based in Jamindan, Capiz.
Citing records, Mabanta said that Nanta was arrested and detained on November
7, 2011 in Cadiz City by virtue of arrest warrants for rebellion, robbery in
band, attempted and frustrated murders.
The official said Nanta was released on February 21, 2012 after a certain
Fred Cana of the militant human rights group KARAPATAN based in Negros
Occidental posted bail of P100,000 for his robbery-in-band case.
Records also showed that he was responsible for the ambush of a government
vehicle on July 13, 2009 that claimed the lives of three civilians including a
14-year-old student in Barangay Salamanca, Toboso, Negros Occidental.
“Nanta has benefited from our judicial system and given a chance to live a
peaceful life. However, he rejoined his group in the NPA after the bail,”
Mabanta lamented.
He then urged the KARAPATAN group to bring him out so he could face the
charges and help the victim’s families attain justice.
Mabanta added that the group should also be held liable for the release of
the suspect since “their actions have led to this La Castellana
ambush-massacre.”
