The New People's Army (NPA)'s Merardo Arce Command denied claims made by the Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) that the four soldiers killed last Sunday in Davao City were unarmed and summarily executed. In a statement, Leoncio Parago, commander of the 1st Pulang Bagani Company of the NPA's Merardo Arce Command, said their fighters "fought it out' against the soldiers at an NPA checkpoint in Purok 5, Barko-barko, Barangay Mapula, Paquibato district. Parago also claimed that an NPA rebel was wounded in the incident. Three .45-caliber pistols were also reportedly confiscated from the soldiers. "Last Sunday's battle can hardly be described as massacre or an abduction, for it was a fitting retribution against a notorious Army unit feared and hated by the peasant masses in Paquibato," Parago said in a statement....
