THREE Abu Sayyaf bandits have surrendered to authorities in Basilan province in the wake of the implementation of Community Support Program on Preventing and Countering Violent Extremism (CSP-PCVE), official said Tuesday, September 2.

Lieutenant Colonel Egverr Jonathan Abutin, 18th Infantry Battalion (IB) commander, said the three surrendered and turned over three high-powered firearms Monday, August 31, in the town of Ungkaya Pukan, Basilan.

The surrender of the three came after the immersion of CSP-PCVE teams from the 18IB, said Egverr.

He said the three Abu Sayyaf surrenderers are undergoing psycho-social debriefing with the help of Balay Mindanao Foundation Inc. (BMFI) and Nagdilaab Foundation Inc. (NFI) in preparation for their reintegration into the society.

The bandits will be enrolled later to the Program Against Violent Extremism (Pave) of the Basilan Provincial Government.

Egverr aid the BMFI and NFI are set to provide the surrenderers livelihood training to make them productive citizens.

One of the three surrenderers, Alias Abu Sampohong, said they surrendered not only because of the hardship and hunger in the mountains, but also because of their belief in the sincerity and concern of the 18IB to help them to live a peaceful and honorable life together with their family.

Sampohong also admitted that he and his cohorts were deceived by the Abu Sayyaf, and what they fought for was just a result of false ideology and radical thought against the Islamic teachings.

Abutin advised the remaining Abu Sayyaf members in Ungkaya Pukan area to peacefully surrender to live a happy life together with their loved ones. (SunStar Zamboanga)
