The Army’s 53rd Infantry Battalion (IB) said it has trained another batch of Small Unit Leadership Development Training (SULDT) to boost the troops' operational capability.
The latest batch of trainees who completed the training Sunday comprises a 10-man squad led by an enlisted man with the rank of sergeant, said Lt. Col. Jo-ar Herrera, 53IB commander, on Monday.
Herrera said 53IB troopers and small-unit leaders were trained to provide effective command and control (C2) and to be "physically fit and mentally tough because they cannot function effectively if they are not physically ready to keep up”.
Herrera told the trainees that "the best weapon to defeat the enemy is a well-trained and well-motivated soldier".
He noted that the latest batch of trainees managed to recover high-powered firearms and a 15-kilogram Improvised Explosive Device (IED) following a firefight against communist New People’s Army (NPA) terrorists on July 11 this year in the Zamboanga del Norte town of Siayan.
Meanwhile, Herrera said that the small unit operations utilizing squads--the smallest unit of the military organization--intends to accomplish missions where larger units may be ineffective and uneconomical.
