Army says NPA killed in Lanao Sur clash

Posted to the Mindanao Examiner (Apr 25, 2020): Army says NPA killed in Lanao Sur clash

ZAMBOANGA DEL SUR – The Philippine Army has confirmed that soldiers clashed with communist rebels on Saturday in the southern province of Lanao del Sur.

Col. Jose Maria Cuerpo, commander of the 103rd Infantry Brigade, said the fighting broke out in the village of Buntalis in Lumba Bayabao town after members of the 49th Infantry Battalion engaged New People’s Army rebels.

Lt. Col. Benjamin Tapnio, the battalion commander, said they stormed the rebel’s hideout and engaged with some 20 gunmen and killed one of them. He said the rebels were operating in the hinterlands of Lanao del Sur, Bukidnon and Iligan City.

He said no soldiers were wounded or killed in the clash.

The fighting was also reported earlier by the military’s Western Mindanao Command which quoted Maj. Gen. Generoso Ponio, commander of the 1st Infantry Division.

But it gave no details or identities of the gunmen, except that soldiers recovered the body of the slain fighter and two automatic rifles and a rocket propelled grenade launcher, and subversive documents and other war materials after the 15-minute clash. (Zamboanga Post)
