Rebel killed, 1 captured in encounter

From the Visayan Daily Star (Nov 23, 2019): Rebel killed, 1 captured in encounter

A suspected New People’s Army rebel died, while his comrade was captured in an encounter yesterday with soldiers of the 62nd Infantry Battalion in Sitio Tambo, Brgy. Santol, Binalbagan, Negros Occidental.

Brig. Gen. Benedict Arevalo, 303rd Infantry Brigade commander, said last night that the 15 suspected NPA rebels encountered by the Army soldiers were those behind the intimidation of a barangay chairman in Isabela town on Thursday.

Arevalo said the identities of the slain and captured rebels, who were left behind by their fleeing comrades, had not been established as of last night, as pursuit operations are still underway.

No one was reported hurt among the 62IB soldiers.

PMaj. Ruben Pajarito reported yesterday that 10 to 15 armed men believed to be NPA members ransacked the house of barangay chairman Charlie Zambrona on Thursday night in Brgy. Tinongan, Isabela.

Pajarito, who is the Isabela police officer-in-charge, said yesterday that the armed rebels were looking for Zambrona, who was not present, when his residence was ransacked.

Failing to recover any gun from the residence of Zambrona, Pajarito said members of his family were told by the rebels that he should not return to the barangay.
The incident took place two days after municipal officials of Isabela led by Mayor Irene Montilla, Sangguniang Bayan and the town Liga ng mga Barangay declared the CPP-NPA as persona non grata.
