PAGADIAN CITY, Zamboanga del Sur — Some 40 youth leaders belonging to the indigenous peoples (IPs) from the provinces of Zamboanga del Sur and Zamboanga del Norte participated in the three-day Youth Leadership Summit (YLS) organized recently by the National Intelligence Coordinating Agency (NICA-9) at Barangay Dao, this City.

Mr. Ronald Padua, assistant regional director for operations said the activity which runs from Oct. 24 to 26, aims to enhance the leadership qualities, promote peace and foster camaraderie among the IP youth.

“This is one of the continuing activities of the government to help the IP youth become effective future leaders,” Padua said.

Padua said the government is needing a group of young people that is not common, who will rise and eventually will achieve an uncommon result.

“The IP youth leaders played a vital role in the realization of government’s peace initiatives by supporting the programs, projects and services and help empower the IP communities in the far-flung barangays,” he stressed.

NICA also discussed the operationalization and institutionalization of Executive Order No. 70 of President Rodrigo Duterte or the "Whole of Nation Approach" to end local communist armed conflict in the country.

Meanwhile, 1Lt Glenn Paul Foronda, civil-military operations’ officer of the 1st Cavalry Battalion said the IP youth are easy targets and highly vulnerable to deceptions by the Communist-Terrorist Groups (CTGs). That is why he called on the IP youth to help the government in finally putting an end to the communist insurgency by "not allowing themselves to be deceived by the false ideologies introduced by the CTGs".

Rudil Dantes, IP youth leader of Zamboanga del Norte said he is very grateful that he was chosen as one of the participants in the summit.

“Dahil sa pagtipon-tipon na ito, dito ko nalaman ang mahalagang tungkulin at responsbilidad ng mga kabataan, pagtulong sa pamahalaan upang makamit ang inaasam na kapayapaan ng ating bansa,” he said. (In this gathering, I learned the important duties and responsibilities of the youth in helping the government to attain peace in our country.)

The Philippine Information Agency (PIA) had also organized the Community Development Information Volunteer Network (CDIVN) to empower the youth be citizen reporters that will make sure that information from the masses reach the government for fast action.

The CDIVN aims to engage community-based volunteers in barangays as linkage to assist in the effective information dissemination and advocacy efforts of the government. (NBE/GCC/PIA-Zamboanga del Sur)
