PUERTO PRINCESA, Palawan -- The Maritime Training Activity (MTA) Sama Sama 2019 (formerly the CARAT Exercises) officially ended last October 21 in Palawan with Western Command Commander Vice Admiral Rene V Medina AFP, as the Guest of Honor and Speaker.

MTA Sama Sama 2019 was participated by the United States (US) Navy, Philippine Navy (PN) through Naval Forces West kNFW) and the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force (JMSDF).


This is the third MTA Sama Sama conducted in the country that aims to promote regional security cooperation, maintain and strengthen maritime partnership and enhance interoperability.

“The closing of Maritime Training Activity Sama-Sama 2019 brings us to a higher level of mutual cooperation as together we endeavor to recollect the undeniable lessons we have gained from this activity.” VAdm Medina emphasized in his speech.

The MTA Sama Sama 2019 with the theme “Strong partnership for capacity building and capability upgrade for maritime security operations” started on October 14 in Puerto Princesa City.

As part of the Shore-Phase activity of MTA Sama Sama 2019, the Naval Forces West conducted community relations (COMREL) through ship tour with the faculty and pupils of different school in Puerto Princesa aboard USS Montgomery at Puerto Princesa Port. The activity is a perfect opportunity for the pupils to experience and made interaction with the crew of USN ship.

Before the joint exercises ends, the Philippine Navy through NavForWest with the USN counterpart conducted sports event through parlor games at Naval Station Apolinario Jalandoon, Parade Ground, Puerto Princesa City, Palawan. The activity includes traditional filipino games such as Tug of War, Centipede Race, Sack Race, Tire Roll Relay Race, Tread the Needle Game, Kadang-Kadang and Patintero. These games promotes camaraderie and friendship among the players. The activity culminated with a simple boodle fight.
