COTABATO CITY – Unidentified gunmen shot dead Monday morning a village chief of North Cotabato town and his escort, police said.
Lt. Col. Benito Rotia Jr., Midsayap town police chief, identified the slain official as Alcon Guiabar Tubasan, 44, of Barangay Tumbras, Midsayap, North Cotabato, and Samanudin Inok, 26, a member of the Barangay Peacekeeping Action Team (BPAT).
Rotia said Tubasan’s wife, Armia Bacar Tubasan, 39, was not harmed by the gunmen.
Initial police investigation showed that the village official and his companions had just finished taking breakfast at a roadside restaurant in Barangay Poblacion 8, when two of four gunmen onboard two separate motorbikes approached and opened fire on them.
“Witnesses said the victims were about to board a tricycle in front of Otso Restaurant around 9 a.m. when four men on two motorbikes arrived. Two of them shot the victims at close range,” the police official said in a radio interview.
Inok, the BPAT member, was reportedly armed and the gunmen took his firearm before fleeing, the same witnesses added.
Spent shells from .45-caliber and 9mm pistols were found at the crime scene.
Relatives said Tubasan’s family is currently locked in a “rido” (family feud) with another Muslim clan in Barangay Tumbras.
